Support Groups
I think of therapy as a process
of examing one's feelings, thoughts, behaviors, communication styles,
and/or significant relationships. We all have histories, experiences,
beliefs, and values that influence how we perceive what is happening to
us in the present. Once an individual or couple is able to identify or
define why something is a problem, effective goals, strategies, and
solutions for change can occur.
Grief counseling is a different
kind of therapy. Loss of a child, partner, or parent is a transforming
event that is thrust upon us. While there are many commonalities to
grief, each of us moves through our grief at our own speed and in our
own unique way. Some people find the sharing and support of others
going through a similar grieving process helpful. It makes them feel
less alone. If this is you, I can help you find a support group. I
lead both a first year young widow/widower grief group and a second
year transition group for younger men and women (age 20 to 50) who are
widowed or who have lost a partner to death. I can also refer you
to support groups for loss of a parent or child.
Other people experience grief as
a private journey, and feel awkward talking about their pain with
others. As a grief specialist, my job is to help you sort out what is
most beneficial and healing.
I have over 30 years of
experience counseling individuals and couples who are going through
life transitions. Marriage, separation, divorce, remarriage, stepfamily
adjustment, job transitions, illness, alcohol recovery, and GLBT
issues. I work with individuals who are experiencing grief about past
life events that have not been resolved, i.e. being raised in a
dysfunctional family due to alcoholism or parental illness.
Often times during periods of
change or introspection people experience anxiety, panic, depression,
despair, fear and uncertainty. I have training in many different
therapeutic techniques. I will utilize all the available tools,
information and resources that I have at my disposal in a
non-judgemental and supportive environment. I am an interactive
therapist and will give you feedback. I encourage questions and
dialogue. While some problems or incidents can be solved with a few
sessions, many life problems will take longer. Together we will develop
a plan.
I have a Masters Degree in
Clinical Psychology from San Jose State University and am a licensed
Marriage and Family Counselor. I was the bereavement coordinator for
Group Health Hospice for two years. I was also involved in the
Western Washington Bereavement Association as both membership
coordinator and treasurer and helped put on monthly seminars covering
the areas of grief, healing and transformation. I am both
a Lifespan and EMDR practitioner. EMDR is a technique that is
especially useful for individuals who have experienced trauma.
